Transportation

Visitors can travel to Miri either by road or by air. Miri is connected to all major cities and towns in Sarawak including Kota Kinabalu in Sabah through the Pan Borneo Highway. Miri is also accessible by road from the capital city of Brunei, Bandar Seri Begawan through the Sungai Tujoh checkpoint which is located 35 km north of Miri.

Taxi

One-way taxi fare from Miri airport to Miri city centre is approximately RM20. On average, a taxi ride around downtown is RM15 to RM20, while a ride from the centre to the Pujut Bus Terminal costs RM25. Taxis run by the Miri Taxi Association can be summoned by phone 24 hours a day.

Bus

The first bus terminal is located at Melayu Road next to Tamu Muhibbah and Visitor’s Information Centre. These buses operate in Miri city only. For long-distance routes, the second bus terminal, Pujut Bus Terminal (or Miri Express Bus Terminal) is located 4km north from the city centre.

  • To/From other Sarawak cities: There are bus companies operating such as Biaramas, Suria Bus Express and Borneo Highway Express that connect Miri with major cities and towns in Sarawak such as Bintulu, Sibu, Sarikei, Kuching and many more.
  • From Brunei: There are two direct services between Bandar Seri Begawan and Miri. PHLS Express operates a dedicated BSB-Miri service, and the other service is EVA Express, with buses from Bandar Seri Begawan to Kuching, which pass through Miri. Please note that there is no longer local bus service between Miri and Kuala Belait, Brunei.
  • To/From Kota Kinabalu, Sabah: Bintang Jaya Express departs from Miri to Kota Kinabalu.
  • To/From Niah Caves: Bas Suria departs from the Miri Express Bus Terminal to Batu Niah town regularly.

Miri Airport

Miri Airport (IATA: MYY) is an airport located 9.5 km South-East of Miri, and it is the second busiest airport in Sarawak. From West Malaysia, there are frequent flights from Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru on Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia. The airport is also connected to all major destinations in Malaysian Borneo, including Kuching and Kota Kinabalu. There are also international flights to Singapore from Miri.

  • To/From Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia Airlines flies six times daily (except Sundays) between Kuala Lumpur and Miri, with one stopping over at Kuching; Malaysia Airlines operates five flights between Kuala Lumpur and Miri on Sundays, with one stopping over at Kuching. AirAsia also flies direct non-stop four times daily.
  • To/From Johor Bahru: AirAsia flies on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
  • To/From Kuching: Malaysia Airlines flies four flights daily, except on Saturdays, where it serves three flights. AirAsia flies two to three times daily.
  • To/From Kota Kinabalu: AirAsia has one to two flights daily. MASWings flies several times daily between Kota Kinabalu via Labuan. It also serves several direct flights daily.
  • To/From Singapore: Malaysia Airlines operates daily flights between Singapore and Miri via Kuching. AirAsia flies direct on Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
